reac to plessy v Ferguson trial.
BACKGROUND....railroad companies must provide separate.. but equal accommodations for white black passengers. plessy, caucasian man but 1/8th African American.... purchased first class ticket for white carriage. authorities came and escorted him out in a roughly manner. he was fined from the courts.. plessy went to fight under the equal pro cause of 14th amendment. having separate cars for white and black passengers violates his 14th amendment right.
Plessy council based their begginning arguments on the fact that abuse and injustices on African Americans is not a new cause. plessy is just another name. they pointed out that right after slavery so called "ended" segregation started. separation of schools, water fountains. bus seats. bathrooms. housing differences.
Plessy team also brought up multiple bible verses in genesis which is the first story in the Bible. it speaks about the creation of earth.. humans and animals, water and land. They highlighted that no where in this story of the Bible, does it state separation due to skin color. They underlined the fact that segregation goes against what us christians believe in. They also brought up financial causes. on how separation of public and private services double the nations expenses and does nothing but back our wealth and economy.
They pointed out that the separation clause is simply unconstitutional and that the court of law aimed to separate based off of race which is illegal. race cannot be the sole reason of ruling. It goes against the principal on the constitution being color blind.
Ferguson strongly based their argument on the fact that no where in the constitution does it say that "black people and white people have to learn together" they believed that ended segregation may cause harm for white people because black people may try to retaliate due to what their elders went through.
They believe that segregation is best and it doesn't mean inferiority but separation. they believe black people need time to catch up due to them not being very educated during slavery. they said that the doctrine separate but equal provides legal cause for this matter. they said that segregation is supported due to the law of equality.
